How to Bet When Playing Roulette

Roulette is largely a game of luck, but it is necessary to know the basic rules in order to have any chance of winning. While you primarily just have to hope that the odds end up in your favor during a particular game, you should think carefully about which kind of bet you'd like to place during each round.

Various Bets

There are a number of different bets you can place when playing roulette. If you bet on a series of one or more random numbers, you are making an interior bet. You can also make outside bets, which are patterned bets. You might bet on numbers in a column or on the corners, for example. You can also make a split bet by placing your chip in between two numbers.

Bet Spreads

It's a good idea to make a series of small bets during roulette, to avoid major losses, and to spread out your bets across the table to increase your chances of taking home at least a modest win. How much you want to spread your bets is up to you. You can bet on five or six numbers, or even on a few dozens, depending on your instinct or playing style. Generally, people bet on first dozens (numbers 1-12), second dozens (13-24), and so on, to keep track of their bets.

It's also possible to make what's called an "even" bet in roulette, which requires that players place bets on colors or on odd or even numbers. The payoff ratio of an even bet is 1 to 2.
